The Romans don’t pour down city centre streets in brigades belting out songs after one too many. They are far more stylish than that. Instead they like to sit on places like the Spanish Steps, or sit outside bars watching the world go by rather than inside getting legless.
There are no licensing laws in Rome so you don’t have to worry about being kicked out of a pub or club just as you are beginning to enjoy yourself. The only thing you do need to bear in mind is that this is a pretty classy city. If there is anything in your backpack that isn’t totally creased and crumpled, wear it. And, while it might not be completely necessary to dress up for smaller venues, you will not get into the bigger clubs in any old thing. It does require a little effort but when you see the lengths the locals go to, you’ll be glad you did so.
While you will find a healthy nightlife throughout the city and its suburbs, the best inner city locations are around Campo dei Fiori, Piazza Navona and Via della Pace. For nightclubs and live music venues your best bet is the Testaccio district which also plays host to countless free concerts during the summer months.
Check out Romac’é or Time Out Roma which both come out on Thursdays to see what’s going on in the city.
